MOACYR SCLIAR

[ Porto Alegre: 1937 ] A native of Porto Alegre, the physician Moacyr Scliar is one of Brazilís most important contemporary writers. Author of nearly fifty books encompassing such genres as fiction, essay, short narratives, and childrenís literature, Scliar is noted for his irony and his strict economy of words. A great number of his works have been translated, and he has won countless literary awards in Brazil and abroad. He also writes for the press. This son of Jewish Russian immigrants, Scliar makes the theme of Judaism a constant presence in his literature. For him, "a writerís first commitment is to master the written word." And his literary production stands as firm evidence that he is entirely right.
