DIAS GOMES

[ Salvador: 1922 1999 ] Dias Gomes started writing for the theater aged 15, and became one of Brazil's leading modern dramaturgs. As editor, narrator, essay-writer, artistic director and actor, he covered the whole gamut of theater, radio and television, writing plays, soap operas and mini series, adapting short stories, soaps and novels. His theatrical output had a consistent political content and ideological line, and his TV soaps were also highly successful, with an inimitable style that enabled people to laugh at their own quirks and foibles. In his opinion television, being too linear, was not the right vehicle for self-examination, however soaps lent themselves to being used as instruments to denounce injustice.
